While many countries including Pakistan and Iran are
represented by their respective ministers, India has sent a joint secretary-rank official to
the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur for the conference of information ministers of Non
Aligned Movement (NAM) countries.
India is represented at the Sixth Conference of Ministers of Information of Non-Aligned
Countries by Mr PK Tripathi, a joint secretary in the Union Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting. The theme of the conference is "advancing information and
communication collaboration towards a more dynamic NAM."
Besides many African countries, some of the Asian countries like Pakistan, Nepal,
Maldives, Bangladesh, Iran and Palestine have sent their respective ministers or deputy
ministers for the conference. Pakistan has deputed Federal Minister of Information and
Broadcasting Sheikh Rashid.
While Pakistan confirmed its minister's participation on October 11, India conveyed to
Malaysia 10 days later, on October 21, that Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of
Information and Broadcasting Pradeep Singh will head the Indian delegation that will
also include Joint Secretary PK Tripathi.
Malaysia has proposed the setting up of a NAM News Network. It would replace the Non-
Aligned News Agencies Pool (NANAP), formed in 1976. Malaysia, as chairman of NAM,
hosted the 13th Conference of Heads of State or Government in 2003. The chairmanship
of NAM for Malaysia will expire in 2006.
The four-day conference, which began on Saturday, consists of two segments -- senior
officials meeting and ministerial meeting. The ministerial meeting of information
ministers, which began on Monday, will conclude on Tuesday. This conference of
information ministers was last held in Nigeria, in 1996.
