In an uncharacteristically terse response, New Delhi on Tuesday
said it does not need Washington's "guidance" on how to conduct bilateral relations with
Iran.
"Neither country needs any guidance on the future conduct of bilateral relations as both
countries believe that engagement and dialogue alone lead to peace," the spokesman of
the Ministry of External Affairs said here in a statement.
The spokesman was responding to a question on the US Department of State
spokesman's remarks that Washington expected India to tell Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad during his visit here next week to meet the United Nations Security Council
resolution on its nuclear programme.
"Both nations are perfectly capable of managing all aspects of their relationship with the
appropriate degree of care and attention," the spokesman said.
The statement issued by the spokesman also said India and Iran are ancient
civilisations whose relations span centuries. "The situation in the region has always
drawn the attention of both the nations and it can be seen perfectly well that these have
been managed through continuous dialogue and exchange of delegations at various
levels," it read.
"It is important that the genius of each nation living in a particular region is respected
and allowed to flower to meet the expectations of enriching relations with neighbours,"
the statement added.
