New visa rules for US tourists

New Delhi
10 December 2009

Following the David Headley Coleman episode, New Delhi is reviewing its
regulations pertaining to the entry of the United States citizens holding long-term Indian
tourist visas. The new guidelines will affect those US nationals who wish to enter India
on a tourist visa within two months of their last departure from India.

Accordingly, the US Embassy here has asked the US citizens travelling to or departing
from India to review travel plans in light of these changing procedures. A message on
the US Embassy website asked its citizens to contact the nearest Indian High
Commission or Foreign Registration Office to ensure they have the most current
information.

"To date, these new regulations are not finalised and are being implemented
inconsistently. The US Embassy and consulates throughout India have received
conflicting information regarding the new rules, but it is clear that the rules will only
affect those who wish to enter India on a tourist visa within two months of their last
departure from India," the message read.
