Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday told a
visiting Indian legislator in Islamabad that there was now an urgent need to make
progress on resolving the Jammu and Kashmir issue in order to consolidate the peace
process.
General Musharraf met with Ms Nirmala Deshpande, a member of the Rajya Sabha and a
Gandhian, at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad, the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Ms Deshpande, who heads the India chapter of the parliamentary group for promoting
peace between India and Pakistan, told General Musharraf that there was a craving for
peace in the people of the two countries and the present environment could be used to
build durable peace in the region. Ms Deshpande also apprised him of her recent
activities in the field of rural development in India.
"The President commended Ms Deshpande for her efforts to promote peace between
India and Pakistan and briefed her on the progress being made in the Composite
Dialogue, including the confidence building measures. The President stressed that there
was now an urgent need to make progress [for resolving the Jammu and Kashmir issue]
in order to consolidate the peace process," the Pakistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
