Samjhauta Express train blasts: Toll rises to 68, 10 recovering from burns in Safdarjung hospital

New Delhi
20 February 2007

The death toll in the blasts aboard the Samjhauta Express climbed
to 68 on Tuesday. Ten passengers, all of whom are the nationals of Pakistan, are
recovering from their injuries in the burns ward of the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi,
the Ministry of External Affairs said.

In a statement put out on Tuesday, the Ministry of External Affairs said that a total of 724
passengers of Samjhauta Express, comprising 479 Pakistani nationals and 245 Indian
nationals, on Monday crossed over from Attari. It said that 619 of the passengers
boarded the train from Delhi while 105 boarded at Attari.

The spokesman of Ministry of External Affairs has said that the High Commission of
India has made arrangements for immediate processing of visas for relatives of those
affected by the tragedy. The Indian High Commission in Islamabad has issued at least
30 visas till Tuesday morning for relatives of the Pakistanis killed in the blasts on the
Samjhauta Express.

A temporary visa camp has been set up in Grand Hotel, 9-A, Davis Road, Lahore to
facilitate early travel of relatives. "Relatives may approach the High Commission of
India in Islamabad for enquiries and assistance," the spokesman said. "The High
Commission of India will also help in coordinating arrangements to enable expeditious
travel to India from Wagah-Attari border."

Rules have been relaxed for individuals with visas to enable them to cross the Wagah
border on foot. Generally the Wagah border is open only for third country nationals and
diplomats and not for citizens of both countries. Besides issuing visas, the Indian High
Commission in coordination with officials in Amritsar has arranged buses for them to
travel to Panipat and New Delhi either to identify the dead or to meet the injured.
