India and Iran have agreed to increase the number of flights per week. The air
services agreement was one of six pacts to be signed Friday towards the end of the two-
day India-Iran joint commission meeting, held here after a gap of 16 months.
Both sides also concluded a pact on the transfer of sentenced persons, and signed four
memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in areas such as renewable
energy, science and technology, cooperation in small scale industry between National
Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) and Iranian Small Industries and Industrial Parks
Organisation (ISIPO), and on cooperation between Central Pulp and Paper Research
Institute of India (CPPRI) and Gorgan University of Agricultural Science and Natural
Resources (GUASNR).
The air services agreement enhanced the number of flights between the two nations from
23 to 31 every week. It also allowed their airlines to operate to two additional
destinations, to be mutually decided upon later.
External affairs minister SM Krishna co-chaired the meeting with Shamseddin Hosseini,
the Iranian minister for economic affairs and finance.
The Indian side said the joint commission meeting provided an opportunity to review
bilateral economic and cultural cooperation. The next meeting of the joint commission
would be held in Tehran.
The Iranian minister called on Prime minister Manmohan Singh and held talks with
Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee. National security adviser Shivshankar Menon also
met with the minister.
During his visit here, the Iranian minister inaugurated a business seminar organised by
FICCI. The business delegation accompanying him also held meetings with Assocham
and CII.
The joint commission mechanism was established in July 1983 and it last met at Tehran
in October / November 2008.
