A junior official working in the United States Department of
Commerce has conveyed to an Indian news agency that the Department of Commerce
hopes that "American companies will be permitted and encouraged to participate in the
historic first construction phase of India's planned international nuclear projects".
In a communication to the Press Trust of India (PTI), Mr Jamie P Estrada said that a
delegation of US energy companies was expected to visit India in December this year.
Mr Estrada is the deputy assistant secretary for manufacturing in the International Trade
Administration section of the US Department of Commerce. He is also the acting
Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services.
The first US energy business delegation had come to India in November last year. US
Under Secretary for Commerce Frank Lavin led that delegation.
"We are working with the US-India Business Council and the Nuclear Energy Institute in
planning this second civil nuclear mission to India. We look forward to learning more
about how India intends to grow its nuclear power sector and to further make the case
that US companies and their technology are the best fit for India's needs and goals,"
Estrada said in his communication.
The PTI report from Mumbai quoted Estrada as saying that "a civil nuclear partnership
between the United States and India will advance energy security, bolster global non-
proliferation, and open up trade and investment opportunities."
