India ignores memorial service for Netaji in Tokyo

New Delhi

India went unrepresented at the memorial service
held last week in Tokyo to commemorate the death anniversary of Netaji
Subhas Chandra Bose as no representative from the Indian embassy in
Japan attended the ceremony.
For the last 60 years, the ashes of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is
enshrined at the Renkoji Temple in Tokyo. On August 18 every year, a
memorial service is organised at the temple in his memory.

This year too, a memorial service was held at the temple, which was
attended by 40 odd Japanese. However, barring two young Indians
accompanied by an old Japanese couple, no other Indian -- neither Indian
ambassador in Japan, Mr ML Tripathi, nor any representative from the
embassy -- attended the memorial service.

The 'diplomatic faux pas' happens even as the one-man Justice MK
Mukherjee Commission probing the mysterious disapperance of Netaji
Subhas Chandra Bose is all set to visit Russia soon to examine
documents and deponents there in connection with the probe.

The Commission, given a six-month extension up to November 14 for the
Russia visit, had earlier planned to visit Russia in July. It would now
have to submit its final report to the government by November 14 this
year.

This would be the first-ever visit to Russia by any Commission
investigating the matter. The Mukherjee Commission is expected to visit
Moscow, Leningrad and Omsk after a researcher of the Asiatic Society
and visiting lecturer of St Petersburg University supported the contention
that Netaji was present in Russia after August 18, 1945.
