India responds: Don't link Iran vote to nuke deal

New Delhi has responded to Washington's terse message by saying
that it rejected any attempt by the Bush Administration to link the position it will take on
the Iran nuclear issue to the ongoing negotiations on the civil nuclear energy
cooperation between India and the United States.

An extraordinary meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency will be held in
Vienna on February 2 and 3 on the Iran nuclear issue. Washington has called for a vote
against Tehran.

In response to queries regarding US Ambassador to India David C Mulford's remarks,
the spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said: "The position that India will take
on this issue at the IAEA will be based on India's own independent judgement."

"We categorically reject any attempt to link this to the proposed Indo-US agreement on
civil nuclear energy cooperation, which stands on its own merits," the spokesman went
on to state.

"With regard to negotiations on the proposed agreement, India will proceed on the basis
of its own national interests, as acknowledged by the US Ambassador himself," the
spokesman added.
