India, US launch democracy website

New Delhi
24 September 2005

India and the United States have launched a website for
promotion of democracy worldwide.

A media communique released by the US State Department on September 22 says that
as a part of the Global Democracy Initiative, both the US and India committed to
establishing a virtual Coordination and Information Centre to share best practices on
democracy, identify opportunities for joint support, and highlight capacity-building
training programmes.

Noting the important link between democracy and development, both the US and India
committed their governments to the Global Democracy Initiative during the summit of
President Bush and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on July 18.

The Virtual Democracy Centre website can be found at .

As part of this initiative the US and India are working to strengthen democratic capacity
in societies who wish to become more open and pluralistic. The US and India are also
cooperating closely under the auspices of the Community of Democracies, supporting
UN electoral assistance programs, and have each provided 10 million dollars to the UN
Democracy Fund.
