India and Singapore on Wednesday inked the comprehensive
economic cooperation agreement for boosting bilateral trade and investment. The 739-
page agreement also provides for easing of visa restrictions for 127 categories of
professionals from both countries.
Visiting Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who arrived on Tuesday night, also
extended support to India's candidacy for a permanent seat in an expanded United
Nations Security Council, the spokesman of the ministry of external affairs told media
persons.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh called on Mr Lee. The
spokesman said that during the meeting, a wide range of regional and bilateral issues
including cooperation in the areas of defence and security were discussed besides
United Nations reform.
Both sides welcomed the signing of the comprehensive economic cooperation
agreement. Mr Lee described the agreement as "a big step forward" in the bilateral ties
and reiterated his government's commitment to a broad-based development of relations
with India, the spokesman added.
